ACADEMY STAR: MAY 2010
The Academy wrapped up it's fourth season on Saturday, May 22, 2010. It was another exciting year at the Academy. Recent highlights included impressive results at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and great performances at the Music Institute of Chicago's 80th anniversary gala celebration honoring Yo-Yo Ma.

STULBERG INTERNATIONAL STRING COMPETITION: February 27, 2010
Allan Steele, cello student of Hans Jorgen Jensen takes third place
Six Academy students made the semi-finals with violist Leah Ferguson, cellist Allan Steele, and Academy alumni Mindy Park (cello) and Emma Steele (violin) advancing to the finals.

SENIOR STRING COMPETITION FINALS
March 27, 2010
Leah Ferguson, viola student of Roland Vamos, won first place at the 2010 National Finals of the MTNA Senior Strings Competition held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
YEHUDI MENUHIN COMPETITION IN OSLO, NORWAY: April 16-25, 2010
Although the Iceland volcano prevented some of the United States finalists from attending this competition, you can hear junior division finalist Gallia Kastner, violin student of Almita Vamos, performance repertoire on YouTube.
ST. PAUL STRING QUARTET COMPETITION: April 17, 2010
Congratulations to the Emerald Quartet (Clayton Penrose-Whitmore, Kenneth Jones-Madris, Ethan Hoppe, and Alex Hersh), coached by Marko Dreher and Roland Vamos and Quartet Danae (Sophia Cho, Zach Spontak, Leah Ferguson, and Benjamin Fried), coached by Roland Vamos who placed first and second respectively. Academy groups were two of the seven advancing to this one-of-a-kind competition for string quartets held in St. Paul, MN.
FISCHOFF NATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION
2010 RESULTS: May 7-9, 2010
Over the past three years, MIC has garnered a very impressive seven of nine top medals! First place went to Quartet Danae with the Emerald Quartet placing second. In addition, three other Academy quartets advanced to the finals: Eroica Quartet, Concordia Trio, and Okemo Quartet.
MIC 80TH ANNIVERSARY GALA: May 11, 2010
MIC honored Yo-Yo Ma with the prestigious Dushkin Award as part of MIC's 80th anniversary gala celebration at the Four Season Hotel this May. Over 500 guests were in attendance and Chicago civic leaders Joan and Irving (posthumously) Harris, John Bryan, and Cindy Pritzker received Cultural Visionary Awards. Sixty-four MIC student sperformed at the event including Academy students/groups: Okemo Quartet, the Emerald Quartet, Matthew Lipman, alumnus Gabriel Cabezas, and Benjamin Fried, Philip Lee, Sonia Mantell, Derek Peters, and Allan Steele.
BEETHOVEN FOUND PROJECT'S WOLRD TOUR CONCERT GALA: June 14, 2010
On June 14, the Beethoven Found Project present a World Tour Concert Gala at the John. F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, featuring performances of Beethoven's rediscovered works. Special guests include the Academy's Aurelia String Quartet (Arianna Smith, Allan Steele, Laura Park, and Susie Koh) which won gold at the 2009 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the St. Paul String Quartet Competition, the Jules M. Laser Chamber Music Competition, and the Rembrandt Chamber Players Music Competition.
